Google Photos, the widely used cloud-based photo storage and editing service, is rolling out a new AI-powered feature that lets users turn themselves into memes.

The feature, called Me Meme, was first spotted in development in October last year and has now been officially announced on Google’s Photos Community site. Designed as a fun and creative tool, Me Meme allows users to generate personalized, meme-style images using their own photos.

In a blog post, Google said Me Meme helps users create “funny, personalized images” that can be easily shared with friends and family. Since the feature is still experimental, the company cautions that AI-generated images may not always perfectly resemble the original photo. To improve results, Google recommends using well-lit, front-facing images with clear focus.

How to use the Google Photos Me Meme feature

Using Me Meme is simple and built directly into the Google Photos app:

  1. Open the Google Photos app and tap Create from the bottom menu.
  2. Select Me Meme, choose a template you like, upload a photo, and tap Generate.
  3. Once the meme is created, you can save it, share it, or tap Regenerate to try a different version.

First-time users will also see a brief introduction screen explaining how the feature works. Google says additional meme templates will be added over time.

The Me Meme feature is currently rolling out to users in the United States on both Android and iOS. A Google spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the rollout will continue over the coming weeks, so not all users may see it immediately.

The launch comes as Google continues to expand its use of AI across core apps. Recently, the company announced Personal Intelligence, a new option that lets AI mode pull context from services like Gmail and Google Photos to deliver more tailored responses based on user interests, habits, travel plans, and photo libraries. The feature will be turned off by default and must be manually enabled.

With Me Meme, Google Photos adds a lighter, more playful layer to its growing set of AI tools, giving users another reason to explore the app beyond photo storage and editing.
