TikTok users across the United States reported widespread problems with the app on Sunday, with thousands saying it was not working properly. The outage comes just days after TikTok completed a major ownership change in the US, aimed at avoiding a nationwide ban and addressing long-standing security concerns. As questions grow around the outage, many users are also asking a bigger question: who owns TikTok now?

TikTok outage reported by users

According to outage-tracking website DownDetector, more than 35,000 users reported issues with TikTok overnight. Around 65 percent said the app was not working properly, 23 percent experienced a complete outage, and about 13 percent reported problems with their TikTok feed. As of now, TikTok has not officially commented on the disruption.

Why the outage matters

The timing of the outage is notable because it comes shortly after TikTok finalized a major restructuring of its ownership in the United States. The deal ended years of legal battles and political pressure that once put the app at risk of being banned nationwide.

TikTok’s new ownership structure in the US

TikTok announced earlier this week that its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, has reduced its ownership stake as part of a deal to create a new American entity called US TikTok.

Under the new arrangement:

  • Oracle, MGX (an investment firm from the UAE), and Silver Lake will each own 15 percent of US TikTok.
  • ByteDance will own just under 20 percent.
  • Other investors include the personal investment office of Dell founder Michael Dell and firms linked to General Atlantic and Susquehanna.

Together, non-Chinese investors will control more than 80 percent of TikTok’s US operations.

Leadership and board changes

Adam Presser, TikTok’s former head of operations, has been named CEO of US TikTok. The new company will be overseen by a seven-member board, with the majority being American. TikTok global CEO Shou Chew will also sit on the board.

Why TikTok made the change

The deal was designed to reduce TikTok’s ties to China and address US national security concerns. Lawmakers have long argued that the Chinese government could potentially use the app to collect data or influence public opinion among TikTok’s more than 200 million US users.

In an internal memo, Shou Chew described the move as “great news,” saying it allows US users to continue creating and discovering content while remaining part of TikTok’s global community.

Political reaction

US President Donald Trump welcomed the deal, calling it a successful conclusion to the TikTok saga. In a post on Truth Social, he said he was happy to have helped save the app and hoped to be remembered by TikTok users in the future.

What happens next?

While the ownership issue appears settled for now, the reported outage shows that TikTok still faces challenges. As the story develops, users will be watching closely for updates from the company on both the technical problems and how the new US-led structure will shape TikTok’s future.
